28th Annual Avia Wildflower Triathlon 2010
California
April 30 - May 2 2010
Brooke Tvermoes
Nicolai Tvermoes
Wildflower has been described as the Woodstock of triathlon and after experiencing our first Wildflower race weekend I couldn’t agree more. The race production itself is top notch and the whole weekend is centered on a triathlon festival, which includes live music all day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. While the race draws some of the best athletes from around the world; this year the male and female winners for IM 70.3 were there plus numerous other former Olympians and World Champions; the atmosphere is relatively laid back. Everyone is there to race hard but to have a good time as well.
When we arrived in CA on Thursday we were greeted by cool temperatures and 30 mph winds. Thankful the winds significantly died down and it warmed-up a lot by race day. However, it was still fairly cold when we started the race, mid 40’s, but it warmed up fast once the sun broke through, which felt really good and made for great racing conditions. Nicolai started off with a smoking fast swim and led his age group through about mile 28 of the bike. He stayed really strong all day and had a very solid ride and stayed tough and held it together for a really strong run. Nicolai was 4th in his age group and the 33rd amateur overall, which is quite an accomplishment at this race. Wildflower was my first Pro race, and while it certainly wasn’t the debut race I was hoping for, I learned a lot and still had a great time. I didn’t believe this the first time I heard it but I understand it now, “racing as a Pro is completely different than racing as an age grouper.” I am happy to have my first Pro race under my belt and look forward to the next!
Inside Out Sports Olympic Triathlon at Beaver Dam
Wake Forest, NC
April 10, 2010
Brooke Tvermoes - 1st female overall
Nicolai Tvermoes - 1st male 40-44 and 6th male overall
www.fsseries.com With temperatures in the low 40’s it was a bit of a cool start to the day but it warmed up nicely by the end of the race, and turned out to be a perfect temperature for racing. The swim was in Falls Lake on the same course they used for the 1 mile open water swim later that day. Nicolai had the 2nd fastest swim split of the day, and Brooke was 9th for the women. The bike course was a 26 mile loop that was really nice but very hilly. The 10k run course was in the park and consisted of an out back that you did twice. It too was also pretty hilly. We both had a lot of fun racing that day and really enjoyed the race venue put on by the folks at Finish Strong.
Charlie's Excellent Adventure in Cold Water - (4/10/10)
This past Saturday I swam the 5280 1 mile open water swim at Beaver Dam just north of Raleigh. http://www.fsseries.com/index.php?action=calendar&type=8 As you know I had to stop running Jan 10th after an injury and in fact had to stop doing any leg exercises of any kind until recently when I was allowed to do spin classes and weights. I arranged for coverage in the hospital while I went on my foray. The water temp was 65-67 and at the urging of some friends I decided to wear a sleeveless X terra wet suit, my first race in a wet suit. I tried it on the night before and it appeared to fit although the neck seemed tight. I decided on race day not to warm up other than swinging my arms around, as that seemed an oxymoron. Sure enough when I was standing in the water, I quickly started shivering. So I peed in my suit for temporary warmth. Immediately before the swim race an olympic distance triathlon started using the same 1 mile swim course with 140 men and 65 women. The top swim times among the 51 males in the 40-60 age group Kevin Younts age 44 (22.50), our own Nicolai age 40 (20.56), Michael Garcia age 49 (23.52) and Joe Brown age 42 (24.28). The fastest person out of the water in the tri group was a 22 yo Brian Duffy 20.37 who for some reason did not do the run portion.
For me, I am embarrassed to say, I panicked! For the wetsuit, if you don't pull it up high enough when you put it on, disaster will strike. As you start and put your head down in the water, it will choke you. I actually contemplated stopping and taking off the suit during the first leg and did finally have to stop twice and tread in the water as I tried to adjust the suit. A bunch of people passed me but I finally either calmed down or the adjustment worked and I was able to finish the race. I was able to catch up and pass a bunch of people. I think I lost about 2 minutes with my girdle adjustments. There were 59 swimmers and the fastest was our own Kevin Herlihy age 30 (19.38). Among the 25 swimmers 40 and older, I was second after 40 yo Alicia Parr who did 23:48 and my time was 24:35, and 12th overall. Since writing this I have had some good advice. Warm up to make sure the suit fits well. Pull it up high enough so the neck is loose and consider not zipping it all the way up. I am now going to swim the 1 mile championship in Huntersville, NC in May.
